The
Akeley Lion's Club adopted 2.5 miles of County Road 25 which
goes around 11th
Crow Wing Lake from Hwy 64 to Hwy 34. There are
two signs up recognizing the Akeley Lion's Club community
service effort. Members will be out in force cleaning the
ditches as soon as the snow melts and it warms up a bit.
We have taken over
taking care of the athletic fields in Akeley for the Walker
- Hackensack - Akeley School District. They are kept mowed
and groomed all summer by volunteer Lions.
LIONISM.
The Lions Organization is an international organization and
serves in many areas throughout the world. Just what does
a Lion do? Our motto is "We serve" and that is exactly
what we do. Each year the Akeley club makes donations to
help maintain the
Minnesota Lion Eye Clinic and hospital, the training
and ultimately placing of a Seeing Eye dog with a blind person.
We support the hearing dog foundation that helps train dogs to
be placed with a deaf person so that he/she can remain
independent. We make donations for research to help find a cure
for diabetes and have helped screen people for diabetes at
Health fairs throughout the world, they help support the youth
outreach camps.
On the local level the
Akeley Lions have held benefits for persons who have
problems with their medical bills, made donations to the Senior
Center, Akeley, Nevis Food Shelf, ARCC,
Minnesota Folklore Theater and the library within the
ARCC. They
constructed the Paul Bunyan picnic area in front of the museum,
and participated during the Akeley Clean-up days. They
have donated time and money to construct the new fence and sign
at the entrance to the cemetery and the new directory. The
Lions are very active in the community during the holidays
generously donating monies and time to various projects and
charities.
We welcome your support!!
