March is Minnesota Food Share Month

FOOD SHELF DONATIONS

March is food drive month. Akeley community food shelf board member Vernon Peterson is challenging local churches, communities and youth organizations to organize a fundraising project during the month of March.

Peterson cites the Active Christian Teens "from St. John's Lutheran Church" of Akeley as a model for a fundraising project.

According to Peterson, this small youth group is planning its third annual carnival and pancake and sausage supper.  The past two years, the group earned $500 to donate to the community food shelf.  The group is expecting to do the same this year.  The event will take place on March 4 from 3 to 6:30 p.m.

It  would be great if other organizations could match what this small group of teens is doing, Peterson said. "They don't have to do a carnival, but a fish fry 'or pancake breakfast, or whatever they want."

Last year the Akeley community food shelf distributed over 30,000 pounds of food.

"The need is there," said food shelf director George Lueck. "Last year the use of the food shelf increased over 10 percent."

The two men described the use of the food shelf from people using it one time to help them through hard times to the "working poor" using it on a regular basis to help make ends meet.

As the cold weather sets in and heating demands need to be met, the need for the food shelf increases, Lueck explained.  Community donations of food and money that are raised in March each year are matched by Minnesota Foodshare.

"Cash is a better match.  We can purchase more food with it." Lueck said. "But donations of canned goods and food are also welcome."

The Akeley community food shelf is located at the First Lutheran Church in Akeley and is open from 9 to 11 a.m. each Tuesday for people in the Akeley and Nevis communities who need assistance.

Checks can be made payable to Akeley Community Food Shelf and mailed to:

Donations of food or money can be made each Sunday in March at any of the
area churches.
Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated!

Located at First Lutheran Church in Akeley, this food shelf is open to everyone in Nevis, Akeley and the surrounding rural areas.  People select the items they will use from what is available.

Community Support is the Key

Akeley Churches have food baskets for collecting donations.  Cash donations need to be designated for the Akeley or Hubbard County food shelf.

Volunteers are needed to help with getting food from the deep freeze and may show up Tuesdays to help.
